Effective Treatment for Fungal Toenails

Are you struggling with thick, discolored, brittle toenails? Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is a common condition that can be difficult to treat without professional care. At FitFeet in Merrick, NY, our podiatrists specialize in diagnosing and treating stubborn nail fungus, helping you restore clear, healthy nails.

What is Nail Fungus?

Nail fungus is a fungal infection that occurs beneath the nail, causing thickening, discoloration, and brittleness. It often starts as a small white or yellow spot but can worsen over time, leading to pain, nail separation, and an unpleasant odor.

Common Symptoms of Fungal Toenails:

✔ Yellow, white, or brown discoloration
✔ Thickened or brittle nails
✔ Crumbling or splitting edges
✔ Distorted nail shape
✔ Foul odor from the affected nail
✔ Pain or discomfort when walking

Nail fungus thrives in warm, damp environments like shoes, locker rooms, and swimming pools. It is also more common in individuals with diabetes, poor circulation, or a history of athlete’s foot.

Professional Nail Fungus Treatment in Merrick

At FitFeet in Merrick, we offer advanced treatment options to eliminate nail fungus and promote healthy regrowth.

Topical and Oral Medications

Prescription-strength antifungal creams, lacquers, or oral medications can effectively target the fungus and prevent its spread.

Laser Nail Fungus Treatment

Laser therapy is a safe, non-invasive option that penetrates the nail to destroy the fungus at the source. This FDA-approved treatment is painless and highly effective.

Debridement (Nail Trimming & Thinning)

For severe cases, we trim and reduce the thickness of the affected nails to improve treatment penetration and reduce discomfort.

Preventive Care & Foot Hygiene Guidance

We provide expert advice on preventing reinfection, including proper foot hygiene, breathable footwear recommendations, and anti-fungal sprays.

Can Nail Fungus Go Away on Its Own?

Nail fungus rarely clears up without treatment and can worsen over time. If left untreated, it can spread to other nails, cause permanent nail damage, or lead to secondary infections, especially in diabetics or those with weakened immune systems.

How to Prevent Nail Fungus Recurrence

✔ Keep feet clean and dry – Wash daily and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
✔ Wear breathable shoes – Opt for moisture-wicking socks and avoid tight, non-ventilated footwear.
✔ Don’t share nail tools – Always use clean nail clippers and disinfect nail salon tools.
✔ Use antifungal sprays or powders – Protect against fungal growth, especially in sweaty shoes.
✔ Trim nails properly – Cut straight across and avoid trimming too short to prevent infections.

Bunions Q and A

A bunion is a painful, bony bump that develops on the joint at the base of your big toe. Bunions occur if one or more bones in the front portion of your foot become misaligned, causing your big toe to pull forward and put pressure on your smaller toes. Ultimately, this causes the joint at the bottom of your big toe to push outward, leading to stiffness, swelling, and redness.

Bunions develop for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they’re the result of wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes with a small toe box. Other times, they occur as a result of a foot deformity or a chronic medical condition such as osteoarthritis.

The symptoms associated with bunions depend on their size, location, and the underlying cause. However, telltale signs include:

  • A bony growth at the base of your big toe
  • Swelling or stiffness around your big toe
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Pain that comes and goes

As a bunion progresses, you might also have difficulty finding a pair of shoes that fit comfortably over the bunion, or you might develop hammertoe.

To diagnose bunions, Dr. Stepensky at Fit Feet Podiatry physically examines your foot, asks you questions about the symptoms you’re experiencing, and takes a series of orthopedic X-rays. He might also ask you to stand up, sit down, and walk around the exam room so he can monitor your gait and posture.

Whenever possible, Dr. Stepensky uses conservative, integrative treatments to relieve bunion pain. If your bunion isn’t interfering with your mobility, he might recommend wearing a different pair of shoes with a wider toe box and additional padding. On the other hand, if your bunion causes you pain, custom orthotics or cortisone injections might be necessary.

If your pain persists for months at a time with little or no relief even after conservative measures of care, surgical intervention may be necessary. Dr. Stepensky offers minimally invasive bunionectomy procedures using arthroscopy and endoscopy to relieve swelling, ease pain, and improve your mobility.

If bunions are preventing you from participating in your favorite activities, make an appointment at Fit Feet Podiatry today–call the office or click the online booking tool to begin.
