Visit FitFeet in Merrick for your custom orthotics plan today!

Your feet are the foundation of your body, and when they’re not properly supported, it can lead to pain and discomfort not only in your feet but also in your ankles, knees, hips, and even your lower back. At FitFeet in Merrick, NY, we specialize in custom orthotics—personalized shoe inserts designed to provide optimal support, alignment, and relief from foot conditions.

Whether you’re an athlete, on your feet all day for work, or experiencing chronic foot pain, our custom orthotics can help restore comfort and mobility.

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts that correct biomechanical issues and provide support where your feet need it most. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, custom orthotics are tailored to your foot structure, gait, and specific needs.

At FitFeet in Merrick, we offer two main types of orthotics:

✔ Functional Orthotics – Designed to correct abnormal motion, such as overpronation (flat feet) or supination (high arches). These are ideal for individuals with plantar fasciitis, shin splints, bunions, and sports injuries.

✔ Accommodative Orthotics – Designed for extra cushioning and support to alleviate pressure points caused by conditions like diabetic foot ulcers, arthritis, and calluses.

Conditions Treated with Custom Orthotics

Our custom orthotics in Merrick can help with a variety of foot and lower limb conditions, including:

Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)

Orthotics provide arch support and heel cushioning to relieve stress on the plantar fascia, reducing morning heel pain and discomfort.

Flat Feet and Overpronation

Individuals with fallen arches often experience foot fatigue, shin splints, and knee pain. Custom orthotics help support the arch and prevent excessive inward rolling of the foot.

High Arches and Supination

If you have high arches, your feet may not absorb shock efficiently, leading to stress fractures, ankle instability, and metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain). Orthotics provide proper weight distribution and shock absorption.

Bunions and Hammertoes

Orthotics can help offload pressure on the ball of the foot and toes, preventing bunions and hammertoes from worsening.

Achilles Tendonitis

Custom inserts help reduce strain on the Achilles tendon, improving foot mechanics and alleviating pain.

Diabetic Foot Conditions

People with diabetes are prone to neuropathy and foot ulcers. Our diabetic-friendly orthotics provide pressure relief and help prevent foot injuries.

Arthritis and Joint Pain

Orthotics help cushion painful joints and improve stability, reducing stress on arthritic feet and improving mobility.

Bunions Q and A

A bunion is a painful, bony bump that develops on the joint at the base of your big toe. Bunions occur if one or more bones in the front portion of your foot become misaligned, causing your big toe to pull forward and put pressure on your smaller toes. Ultimately, this causes the joint at the bottom of your big toe to push outward, leading to stiffness, swelling, and redness.

Bunions develop for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they’re the result of wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes with a small toe box. Other times, they occur as a result of a foot deformity or a chronic medical condition such as osteoarthritis.

The symptoms associated with bunions depend on their size, location, and the underlying cause. However, telltale signs include:

  • A bony growth at the base of your big toe
  • Swelling or stiffness around your big toe
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Pain that comes and goes

As a bunion progresses, you might also have difficulty finding a pair of shoes that fit comfortably over the bunion, or you might develop hammertoe.

To diagnose bunions, Dr. Stepensky at Fit Feet Podiatry physically examines your foot, asks you questions about the symptoms you’re experiencing, and takes a series of orthopedic X-rays. He might also ask you to stand up, sit down, and walk around the exam room so he can monitor your gait and posture.

Whenever possible, Dr. Stepensky uses conservative, integrative treatments to relieve bunion pain. If your bunion isn’t interfering with your mobility, he might recommend wearing a different pair of shoes with a wider toe box and additional padding. On the other hand, if your bunion causes you pain, custom orthotics or cortisone injections might be necessary.

If your pain persists for months at a time with little or no relief even after conservative measures of care, surgical intervention may be necessary. Dr. Stepensky offers minimally invasive bunionectomy procedures using arthroscopy and endoscopy to relieve swelling, ease pain, and improve your mobility.

If bunions are preventing you from participating in your favorite activities, make an appointment at Fit Feet Podiatry today–call the office or click the online booking tool to begin.
