Living with Heel Pain? We Understand

Heel pain is something we see every day at Fit Feet Podiatry. It’s more than just a sore foot. It can make your mornings difficult, your workday unbearable, and your evenings frustrating. Maybe it’s a sharp, stabbing pain when you first get out of bed. Maybe it’s an aching heel that gets worse the longer you stand or walk. If you live in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and you’re looking for real relief, you’re in the right place

We’re not just heel pain doctors. We’re partners in your care. Our job is to help you get back to doing the things you love without the constant reminder of foot pain every step of the way

Common Causes of Heel Pain

Most people don’t realize how many different conditions can cause heel pain. At our Brighton Beach office, we see it all. The most common condition we treat is plantar fasciitis. That’s the inflammation of a thick band of tissue on the bottom of your foot. But there are many other causes, including Achilles tendonitis, heel spurs, bursitis, nerve irritation, and stress fractures

Some patients come in after a sports injury. Others develop heel pain from years of standing at work or walking in unsupportive shoes. We’ve seen parents who can’t keep up with their kids. Nurses and teachers who are constantly on the move. Retirees who just want to enjoy a walk in the park without thinking about their feet

How We Diagnose Heel Pain at Fit Feet Podiatry

Every case of heel pain is unique. That’s why we start with a full conversation. We ask about your daily routine, your job, the type of shoes you wear, and how long the pain has been going on. We look at how you walk and check for tenderness, swelling, or stiffness

We don’t just treat symptoms. We find the root cause. That’s how we’ve helped so many people across Brooklyn, New York feel better and stay better

Heel Pain Treatment Options

We believe in starting with conservative care. Our goal is to get you results without surgery if we can. Here are some of the most effective treatments we use

Custom Orthotics

If your foot structure is contributing to the pain, we can create a custom orthotic that supports your arch and reduces strain on your heel

Stretching and Strengthening Exercises

We’ll guide you through simple, effective exercises that you can do at home to loosen tight tissues and strengthen your foot and ankle muscles

Footwear Advice

Not all shoes are created equal. We’ll help you choose shoes that support your feet properly and take pressure off your heels

Taping and Padding

These techniques can reduce pain and help your foot heal by changing the way forces are distributed when you walk

Anti-Inflammatory Treatment

That might include oral medications, topical treatments, or in-office therapies designed to reduce inflammation in the heel

Laser Therapy or Injections

For stubborn cases, we may recommend advanced treatments like cortisone injections or laser therapy to promote healing in deeper tissues

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Surgery is rarely necessary but when it is, you’re in expert hands. Our heel pain specialist will talk you through every step and make sure you’re supported before, during, and after treatment

Heel Pain Q and A

Heel pain is any type of discomfort that affects the back or underside of your heel. Some people experience pain that’s dull and throbbing, while others experience pain that’s sharp and stabbing. Heel pain usually doesn’t point to a more serious health problem, but it can significantly interfere with your quality of life and your ability to participate in simple activities like taking a walk or climbing a flight of stairs.

The two most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. However, there are a variety of other problems that can trigger heel pain, including:

  • Bone tumors
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Heel spurs
  • Bursitis

You might also develop heel pain as a result of peripheral neuropathy or tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Oftentimes, mild or moderate heel pain subsides on its own with conservative measures of at-home care, including rest, ice, compression, and elevation (the RICE protocol), wearing padded, comfortable shoes, or taking over-the-counter medications. However, if your pain persists or gets worse, it’s important to make an appointment with Dr. Stepensky at Fit Feet Podiatry.

You should also make an appointment with Dr. Stepensky if you experience heel pain that occurs when you aren’t walking or standing or heel pain that’s associated with a fever or numbness in your heel.

To diagnose heel pain, Dr. Stepensky reviews your medical history, asks you about the symptoms you’re experiencing, and performs a thorough physical exam. He might also take a series of X-rays and ask you to walk around the exam room, rotate your heel, or place light pressure on your affected heel. These activities can provide him with a better idea of where your discomfort originates.

Whenever possible, Dr. Stepensky uses conservative, integrative treatments to relieve heel pain. Depending on your symptoms, he might recommend rest and ice therapy, physical therapy, custom orthotics, or steroid injections.

If these methods of care don’t relieve your symptoms, you may benefit from treatment with the Zimmer enPulsPro extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) system. This method of care addresses heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. Dr. Stepensky typically recommends four treatment sessions spaced one week apart. Each session takes only five minutes, and there’s no downtime involved. What’s more, this treatment boasts an 80-85% success rate.
